Fibershed & Crochet
This bag is meant to highlight local resources and local artisans. Even though it seems like a regular crochet bag it is actually made with materials and resources within a 250 mile radius of New Orleans. The yarn was dyed using loquat leaves and pomegranate skin. The interior is made with 100% hemp fabric denim from a closed mill within the area and the rest of the yarn is meant to represent the hand spun Acadian brown cotton yarn spun by the New Orleans Weavers guild. Due to time constraints the Acadian brown cotton yarn was not able to be acquired but it is supposed to be a representation to draw attention to untapped local resources.
Project Workflow
1.
Mood Board
Products: I looked at various crocheted products that were used in everyday life. I liked the idea of making a textile good that was made directly from the yarn, skipping the weaving step.
Processing: The bottom mood board was meant to showcase my inspiration when it came to my resources. I wanted to use unconventional resources that were durable and colorful.
2.
Prototyping & Ideation
The initial form was crocheted just to get a understanding of sizing and patterns
3.
Dyeing
The green color was made with pomegranate skins and the pink color was made with loquat leaves.
4.
Concept Sketches
These concept sketches are meant to show a three set product that can be made with the same crochet square
